"I Prefer Their Old Stuff"

When I were a wee nipper, around five or six years old, the only music device I had of my own was an old Bush AM/MW radio that my grandpa had given me (it was antique when I got it, I’m not that old! I wish I still had it though, might be worth a few quid now). My eldest sister had a turntable that I was allowed to use to listen to a clutch of old sixties and seventies 7″ singles of my parents’ on one of those record changer thingies (exactly like the picture on this page). Some of the ones I can remember were “Kites” by Simon Dupree, “Son of my Father” by Chicory Tip (yikes!), and one of my dad’s, a red vinyl 7″ of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture (which I’ve still got) Another tune from this period I remember hearing on the radio and liking was the rather sickly “Seasons in the Sun” by Terry Jacks from 1974 which still evokes waves of nostalgia.

However, for today’s penultimate post in the challenge, I’m going to pick a track by Simon & Garfunkel. Another record my parents had that I listened to regularly with my dad’s headphones lodged precariously on my little head was their Greatest Hits album from 1972. I nearly picked a track off this for either the “guilty pleasure” or “no one would expect you to love” posts but decided it fitted better here.

The track that was my favourite as a kid was “Cecelia”, the lyrics about them making love in the afternoon completely going over my innocent little head!
