Thirteen may be unlucky for some but not in terms of this set of mixes, ‘cos volume 13 is another doozy! The atmospheric two handed opener off Steve Mason’s “Monkey Minds in the Devil’s Time” album leads to the utterly gorgeous John Grant tune. I’d just discovered his “Queen of Denmark” album at this time and was (and still am) in awe of this melody, so pure you can’t believe you’ve not heard it before somewhere, beautiful.
After this we have the wonderfully hypnotic Land Observations tune off Roman Roads IV – XI, a tune from Mogwai’s soundtrack to Les Revenants TV show and then the mix really kicks off with Melt Yourself Down getting you on your feet and dancing!
The mix closes with a couple of rather tasty cover versions and Autolux’s classic tune. That would possibly be my only criticism of vol.13, it doesn’t feel like a closing track. Still, in that case it possibly leaves you wanting more no?
