30 Days of Music: Day 16 – A Song That You Used To Love But Now Hate

There are those extreme emotions again, love and hate. With the tune I am going to pick for today I didn’t really love it and now I don’t really hate it, but it’s a good example of how a perfectly good tune can become irritating and unlikeable purely through over exposure.

I got hold of The Big Pink’s debut album “A Brief History of Love” from emusic in 2009 and enjoyed their MBV-lite electro-rock stylings. Initially I thought “Dominos” stuck out like a bit of a sore thumb amongst the rest of the tracks with its infectious, if repetitive, chorus. This was unsurprisingly chosen as a single and went on to be their most successful release. Unfortunately due to this it got a fair amount of airplay and even though I listen to the radio very infrequently it quickly got tiresome and now if I listen to the album – although due to this track I don’t listen to it that often, another annoyance – I find I skip over it.

The band in general was a case of instant but quickly waning attraction. I still really like Velvet though.
